MTN TV pilot broadcast begins today in Nigeria

MTN Nigeria, the largest mobile phone company in Nigeria by subscriber number, is now launching a digital TV foray following a digital broadcast licence issued the company last year by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).

MTN Nigeria said in a press statement to Technology Times that that the pilot launch billed for today in Jos, Plateau State will drive Nigeria into the era of true convergence of telecommunications, broadcasting and media.

Ferdi Moolman, CEO, MTN Nigeria says that the converged TV service will provide Nigerians consumers with innovative digital platforms. Once commercially launched, “the TV service will deliver an exciting bouquet of rich local and international content to Nigerians.”

According to the MTN Nigeria CEO, subscribers also be able to watch their favourite programmes “when they choose to via MTN VOD service, rather than having to watch at a specific broadcast time. This will be the first fully converged broadcast and OTT-VOD service to launch in MTN.”

Moolman says the launch of MTN TV is another bold demonstration by the mobile phone company to let “Nigerians keep pace with the latest global trends and converged solutions.”
Lynda Saint-Nwafor, an Executive of MTN Nigeria says that the phone company is constantly seeking appropriate channels to place the latest technologies and services in the hands of Nigerians, hence the MTN TV service.

According to her, “MTN’s vision is to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world. We are committed to exploring opportunities and avenues to expand our digital footprint and value offering to our customers.”
