It’s going to be a great three months for SuperSport subscribers in Nigeria. This is because not only will the broadcast giant cover the entire Euro 2016 in France, but it will do likewise for the Rio Olympics.
In a coming out party in Lagos on Tuesday the company unveiled a massive programme schedule that will blanket the much anticipated Euro 2016 that will run from June 10 through July 10 as well as the Olympics slated to start on August 5 and end on the 21st. Both competitions will be dissected by an all star team of commentators that will offer pre and post match summations in their usual witty and informative manner.
In regards to Euro 2016, all games will be available in High Definition, from the opening kick-off on June 10 where France will lock horns with and Romania in Group A action, till the final game in St Denis on July 10.
Uefa boasts of having five of the top 10 teams in the world and while there are no clear cut favourites on paper Belgium [above]ranked at 2, have been tipped by many a pundit as the team to beat.
But don’t tell that to hosts France who under coach Didier Deschamps have regained their form, nor to the German world champions who have seemingly found the right influx of youth to replenish the mass retirements after the last World Cup. Even the English, now ranked at 10 in the world, are bullish.
It’s certainly going to be exciting and SuperSport will make sure you don’t miss one second of the action.
Now to the Olympics.
While the focus in Brazil locally will obviously be on the Nigerian men's under-23 national team who have been drawn in Group B of the Olympic football for men alongside Sweden, Colombia and Japan, other teams like the womens’ relay team, buoyed by the super fast Blessing Okagbare, will also be in prime time and watched by millions..
She and the rest of the quartet of Regina George, Dominique Duncan and Christy Udoh [above], shaved two seconds off their national/African record set in 2015 to take the gold medal in 1:30.52 at the IAAF relays in the Bahamas and all of Africa will certainly be watching to see if they can improve on that.
As we know the Nigerian Dream Team [below] led by coach Siasia has been named among the favourites to lift the Golden Fleece in Brazil and replicate what it did at the Atlanta Olympics by becoming the first African nation to win the gold in football.
