FACTS AND RECORDS BROKEN IN THE ONGOING EUROS

The most awaited competition is underway, it kicked off  on Friday 10th June, 2016 with an opening fixture game between host France and Romania. Actions have been recorded, goals have been scored, points collected and games won.

That's not all as the record books have been opened.

Here's a few records broken and made as the tournament progresses;

FRANCE:

Olivier Giroud's first goals vs Romania was France's 50th goal of an European tournament

Dimitri Payet is the first player after Thierry Henry to score and assist a  goal in a Euro competition.

THE XHAKA CONNECTION:

For the first time in the European tournament history, two brothers would face each other in opposite directions, playing for different teams. They are:

Granit Xhaka of Switzerland and Taulan Xhaka of Albania

WALES:

Wales recorded their first win ever in an European championship against Slovakia with a 2-1 scoreline, goals from Gareth Bale and Hal Robson-Kanu gave them all three points.

As the tournament progresses, more records would be broken and the archive room of facts would be visited. Well, its not surprising but....it might interest you to know that:

 

ENGLAND:

England have never won their opening fixture in a European championship, you could say, the jinx has been there. The reason they couldn't run away with all three points against Russia.

GERMANY:

Germany have not lost their opening game at the European championship (W7, D5, L0). Quite a record, the reason they are the World best team.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's goal against Ukraine was the first by a German substitute at the Euros since Oliver Bierhoff in the 1996 final.

POLAND:

Arek Arkadiusz Milik (22 yrs, 104days) is the youngest ever goals scorer vs Northern Ireland for Poland at the Euro Chamionship

Robert Lewandowski didn't register a shot on target vs Northern Ireland, his worst record in a Euro game.

CZECH REPUBLIC:
Tomas Rosicky is the oldest (35) to represent Czech Republic in an Euro tournament, he was the youngest (19).

SPAIN:

Spain are unbeaten in their last 13 games in the Euros (W10, D3), the longest run in the history of the competition.

IRELAND:

SWEDEN:

Sweden are the first team to score a goal in a Euro tournament since 1980 without registering a shot on target.

BELGIUM:
Belgium have lost 6 out of their last 8 games at the Euro Championship.
Since the start of the Euro tournament, no striker has had a poor game as Romelu Lukaku vs Italy; 76% pass accuracy, 0 take-ons, 0 chances createed, 0 aerial duel won, 0 shots on target. OFF FORM!

Italy have kept more clean sheets (17) at the Euros than any other team in the history of the competition.
Italy's starting XI Vs Belgium is the oldest of any country in the history of the EUROS Championship (39y, 98d).

ICELAND:
The EUROS is Iceland first major tournament in history.
Iceland is the smallest country represented at the EUROS

PORTUGAL:

Since 2008, Portugal have not won their opening game at EUROS and a major tournament.

Ricardo Carvalho is the third oldest (38y, 27d) outfield player to start a EUROS game after Matthaus and Olsen.

SLOVAKIA:

Slovakia won their first ever game at the EURO Championship against Russia.

RUSSIA:

This is the first time Russia have taken Slovakia in the EUROS Championship.

HUNGARY:

Gabor Kiraly is the first Hungarian goalkeeper to have kept a cleansheet at the EUROS Championship against Austria.

AUSTRIA:

Austria were unbeaten in their EURO Qualifier, their loss to Hungary spoilt their unbeaten run.

FRANCE VS ALBANIA:

France attempted 15 shots (including blocks) the most for a team with none on target in a game at the EUROS since 1980.

Antoine Griezmann is the first French player to come on as a sub & score in the EUROS since the 2000 final (WILTORD & TREZEGUET)

3 of France's 4 goals at the EUROS 2016 have come in the 89th minute or later.

Bodgan Stancu is only the third player to net 2+ penalties in a EURO finals tournament (Arnesen in 1984 and Mandietta in 2000)

GERMANY VS POLAND:

Germany Vs Poland is the first goalless draw in the group stages of the Euros since 2008 (France Vs Romania) 

 Gareth Macauley is the first Northern Ireland player to score in a European Championship

SHOTS CONCEDED:

Spain, England, France, Netherlands and Yugoslavia have conceeded 2 free kicks goals in European Championship

Euros 2016 has seen more goals after the 86th min (11)  than in the first half (10). There have been more late goals in the Euros.

SPAIN VS TURKEY:

Spain are the first team to score more than 2goals in a  Euro game since SPAIN in the final of 2012.

Spain have not conceded a goal in the last 690mins in the Euro tournament. The best in the tournament history.

Nolito is the 35th different scorer for Spain at the Euros, the most in Euros history (one more than Germany 34).

Sergio Ramos' booking is the 4th fastest in Euro history after Arbelardo vs England in 1996: 25th min.

ITALY VS SWEDEN:
There were just 12 shots in the Italy vs Sweden game, the fewest in a single Euro final game since 1980.

BELGIUM:

Belgium needed 28 passes to score the second goal vs Ireland, the longest build-up in a Euro championship since 1980.

SWITZERLAND:
Switzerland have made it to the knock-out stages of the European Championship for the first time. Celebration.

Paul Pogba is the first France player to hit the woodwork at least twice in the same Euro game since 1980.

Eidur Gudjohnsen  is the 5th oldest outfield player to play at the Euros after MATTHAUS, OLSEN, VASTIC and CARVALHO.

Petr Cech has conceeded 21 goals at the Euros championships, more than any goalkeeper in the history of the tournament.

ICELAND:

Iceland are the first country with so few  inhabitants to make it to the knock-out stages of the Euros (330,000) populace.

PORTUGAL:

Portugal are the first team in the Euros history to go through the group stages without winning any game. Dicey.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the first player to score in four different Euros championship finals tournament.

DO YOU KNOW?

Portugal are the only team to progress to the Semi-finals of an European championship without winning a single game on normal regulation time? they haven't won in 90 mins.

Wales are in their 1st Semi-finals in a major tournament since their history.

Wale's Aaron Ramsey has gave 2 assist in a European championship for the first time, no player has achieved that feat in the history of the tournament.
