8 Effective Ways How To Reduce Water Retention

Water retention, known under its medical term as edema, is an accumulation of fluids in the cardiovascular system, or inside the body’s cavities and tissues. It causes swelling in feet, hands, legs and ankles, and it is a common condition in pregnant women or in women with PMS.
It can also affect persons who are not physically active, after a long sitting period, persons who are on medications, etc. Even though this condition is not life threatening, it can be an indication of certain serious medical diseases like kidney problems, heart failure and so on.

Although this may sound strange, the lack of water intake is a major cause of water retention in the body.

If you feel bloated, chances are you have a problem with fluid accumulation in the body. Here we present you with some tips how you can prevent this.
1. Drink More Water
In cases of reduced hydration, the body does not get all the water it needs, and it enters into a kind of a survival mode, by retaining the small amounts of water it actually gets, by reducing the urinary excretion. Water helps sustain all body functions and releases toxins from the body, so drinking at least 2 liters of water per day is prevalent.

2. Lift Your Legs Up

Lie on your back and lift your legs up in a horizontal position, or put them on a cushion. This will help you get rid of the water that has accumulated in your legs.

3. Avoid Salt

Salt stimulates water retention, so pick your meals carefully, avoiding foods that contain a lot of salt. Remember that salt does not enter your body only with salty foods, as there are many unsalted meals, which may contain hidden salt, and you may not even know it.

Large quantities of salt are found in air-dried meat and canned products, and studies have shown that even some breads and cereals contain excessive amounts of salt, so be careful.
